The Alcuin Society has announced the winners of The Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. One of NeWest Press's books A Revision of Forward by Wendy McGrath, received an honourable mention in the Poetry category.
Designed by Natalie Olsen (Kisscut Design), A Revision of Forward's cover highlights the not-quite-mirror poems within its pages, the playful poetic sequence that gives the book its title, which was the product of a more-than-decade-long improvisational collaboration with printmaker Walter Jule. Natalie's design used fragments of images from the printmaker's work to craft a thoroughly beautiful and thoughtful book, from the first page to the last, from the front to the back cover.
Natalie was also awarded third place for Prose Fiction design for The Swallows Uncaged: a Narrative in Eight Panels by Elizabeth McLean (Freehand Books) and another honourable mention for Poetry design for We Can’t Ever Do This Again by Amber McMillan (Wolsak and Wynn Publishers).
Congrats to Natalie, and all the authors and publishers and other designers. Great design deserves recognition; thanks to the Alcuin Society for organizing the awards.
