April is National Poetry Month, and we're celebrating with a rather unique pair of titles. Sarah de Leeuw's Geographies of a Lover charts an erotic and sometimes antagonistic love that sweeps across the continent, mirroring sensual imagery with physical environment in unforgettable ways. On the other end of the emotional spectrum, Barbara Langhorst's first book of poetry, Restless White Fields, details the difficulties found in moving on from a violent past. This season, we're pleased to introduce a new face to the NeWest family. May will see the release of Saskatchewan author Cassie Stocks' first novel, Dance, Gladys, Dance. A high-spirited narrative (with a charming, supernatural twist), Dance, Gladys, Dance follows 27-year-old Frieda Zweig as she fights to find her place in the "real world". Having long ago given up her dreams of becoming an artist, Frieda befriends Gladys, a ghost whose failure to live up to her own ambitions mirrors Frieda's current impasse. Lastly, Dianne Meili's seminal First Nations title, Those Who Know: Profiles of Alberta's Native Elders, is receiving a beautiful new edition for its 20th anniversary. With updated profiles, new entries, and a complete redesign, Those Who Know will close out NeWest's spring 2012 season with a bang. For a more detailed look at each of these titles, please take a look at our spiffy new catalogue and let us know what you think! |
