From one author to another PDF Print

On November 1 at the Auburn Saloon in Calgary, Garry Ryan, author of A Hummingbird Dance, introduced fellow Fall 2008 author Monica Kidd at her Alberta launch of Any Other Woman. We were so impressed with his above-and-beyond approach to introducing Kidd that we couldn't resist sharing it. From one NeWest author to another, here is what Ryan had to say about Kidd's new release:

The prairies,
Newfoundland
and Slovakia fit together,
somehow.

There’s magic to this book.
By revealing the people,
the present and the past,
Monica creates a universal experience.
She takes us on a journey
that becomes ours.
Showing us what it was like,
what it is like,
to find life in this land.
And, as she unearths her past,
she resurrects ours.
That’s the essential gift of this book.

Delburne, Jasper, the Pass, St. Albert, Drumheller,
Vulcan, Red Deer, Elnora.
Epidemics, quarantines, the Depression, losing a child,
and finding land to belong to.

                    The concept of Rosencrantz.

This story is like so many of our stories.
We’re descendants of people who came here because
LAND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD.
Because Monica is a doctor of the body and the heart,
she is able to communicate all of this to her reader.
I feel fortunate to have read her book,
and now, to be here to listen to what she has to say.
