Glen Huser

A teacher and consultant for several years with Edmonton Public Schools, Glen Huser developed Magpie, a quarterly publication featuring writing and graphics by students which is continuing into its 30th year of publication. His literature resources for teachers continue to be widely used in Alberta schools and elsewhere. During the 1980’s and ‘90’s, Glen reviewed children’s and young adult books for the Edmonton Journal. In creative writing workshops and residencies, he has been involved with writers at all age levels -- from kindergarten to senior citizens. Recently, he has worked as a sessional instructor in language learning at the University of Alberta and UBC and is currently teaching the online courses in Children’s Literature for UBC’s graduate-level Creative Writing program. After dividing his time between Edmonton and Vancouver for several years, Glen committed to a west coast home base in 2007.

Glen’s short stories have appeared in Prism International, Dandelion, and a NeWest Anthology, Alberta Rebound. In 1991, Grace Lake, one of NeWest Press’s Nunatak series of first novels, was shortlisted for the W. H. Smith/Books in Canada First Novel Award. His first young adult novel, Touch of the Clown, was nominated for several awards and became a Mr. Christie silver-medal winner. Stitches, his second novel for young adults, won a Governor General’s Award for children’s literature, as well as Alberta’s R. Ross Annett Award. His latest novel for young adults, Skinnybones and the Wrinkle Queen, was shortlisted for a number of awards and won a Governor-General’s silver medal in 2006.
