Frank Davey

Frank Davey has been a poet, editor, small magazine publisher, literary critic, and cultural critic in Canada since 1961. He is editor and co-founder of the notorious poetry newsletter Tish (1961-63) and since 1965 editor of Open Letter, the Canadian journal of writing and theory. With Fred Wah in 1984, he founded SwiftCurrent, the world's first on-line literary magazine, and operated it until 1990. He is the author of a number of books of Canadian criticism and poetry. Canadian Literary Power was published by NeWest Press in 1994.

In 2005, the conference Poetics and Public Culture in Canada was held at the University of Western Ontario, in honour of Davey. Keynote speakers included Charles Bernstein, Lynette Hunter, and Smaro Kamboureli. Material from the conference has been published in Open Letter 12:8 (Poetics and Public Culture, Spring 2006), Rampike 15:1 (Frank Davey Issue, 2007), and Studies in Canadian Literature 32:2 (Poetics and Public Culture in Canada, 2007). Discussions provoked by the conference have been published in Open Letter 12:9 (Productive Parentheses: Interviews and Dialogues from the Poetics & Public Culture in Canada Conference, Summer 2006) and Open Letter 13:7 (Dialogues on Poetics and Public Culture, Fall 2008).

Frank Davie's latest long poem is Back to the War, released in 2005 by Talonbooks. A new book, Bardy Google, will be released in 2010 by Talonbooks.
