FICTIONISTAS is back!

. . . in stiletto swing. We've partnered with gravitypope TAILORED GOODS, who will be hosting our fabulously fashionable FICTIONISTAS events in Edmonton and Vancouver -- because who says great literature and fashion can't mix?

This Fall, five independent publishers (NeWest Press, Coteau Books, Gooselane Editions, Turnstone Press, and Thistledown Press) are partnering to host two evenings of fiction, fashion, and food. Wear your finest foot apparel, as the participating authors will jury a competition that will award the guest wearing the most eye-catching pair of shoes. The prize? Fictionista fiction, of course.

In the media

On Cleavage by Theanna Bischoff, Cahoots Magazine writes:
"Such a mastery of words at such a young age! Bischoff, at the age of 24, writes a book full of poignant, carefully detailed, colourful vignettes that tell the story of Leah, the young main character's, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and how this experience alters, interplays, interferes with (or just happens alongside) the rest of her life. The writing is superb. Full of such interesting tidbits that the characters seem very real and the situations entirely plausible. As Steinbeck was a master of painting landscape with his words, Bischoff is well on her way to mastering the telling of thought, movement, and dialogue. Walk with Leah in her story, immerse yourself in her life and loves, laugh and cry and contemplate what it might be like to be in her shoes."

"This is a thoroughly enjoyable book. ... In this truly remarkable treatment of a plant by one who sought to know it truly, the subtopics span painting, poetry, language, ecology, sociology, economics, and business development. It captures the thoughts and ideas of people who live within an arm’s length of the salal patch, and of urban dwellers who are more attached to the internet than to the mycorrhizal net of salal in the forest floor." - Canadian Literature

About the book Cole Blackwater’s life isn’t what it used to be. Once a political superstar within Ottawa’s environmental movement, he now runs a nearly defunct conservation strategy consulting firm that distinctly lacks a paying client. His ex-wife loathes him for a scandalous affair that ended their marriage, he feels he’s failing his eight-year-old daughter as a father, and he’s turning far too often to the bottle to solve his problems.

When Peggy McSorlie, head of the Eastern Slopes Conservation Group, seeks his help to stop a mining project planned for Alberta’s magnificent Cardinal Divide, Blackwater jumps on the opportunity to earn enough money to pay the rent and buy a few pints at his favorite pub. But when Mike Barnes, head of the mining project, is brutally murdered and a radical member of Eastern Slopes is accused of killing him, Blackwater must first prove the man’s innocence in order to save his own business, and the future of the Cardinal Divide.
